Charles Gatewood was born in 1942 in Illinois. In 1966, a photograph of Bob Dylan brought him international acclaim and he moved to New York, working for The Manhattan TribuneThe New York Times and Rolling Stone magazine. In addition to his journalistic work, Gatewood photographed nightlife and extreme lifestyle subcultures. He received the Leica Medal of Excellence in 1985.
