AboutThe Honorable Hortense W. Gabel was an advocate for fair housing, acting as director of the Committee on Discrimination in Housing during the 1950s, then as the head of New York City's Rent and Rehabilitation Administration, and then the vice president of the Center for Community Change. She later became the acting justice of the State Supreme Court, and in 1986 was named "Judge of the Year," by the National Association of Women Judges. She earned a BA from Hunter College, and a JD from Columbia Law School.
