James Johnson Sweeney was a prominent American curator and arts administrator during the 20th century. He was curator of the Museum of Modern Art from 1935 to 1946, and then the director of the Guggenheim Museum from 1952 to 1959. He also was the director of the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas, and consulted with numerous international cultural institutions.
