Description
The recording begins mid-event. In the first of four segments, Benedict (Ben) Fernandez converses with a workshop participant about inquiry and active learning, and addresses concerns students have about the workshop. Fernandez then introduces Angel Franco, Stephen Shames and Herlinde Koelbl. Fernandez begins by discussing important photographs from his career, including his work featuring Martin Luther King, Jr. The recording ends in a debate on photography education with the same participant featured in the beginning of the recording. The student continues to challenge Fernandez in the second segment, after which Franco begins his presentation. He discusses photographs and projects from his career, as well various business strategies. Participants ask questions throughout. Franco's presentation continues in the third segment, followed by Koelbl, who presents a slideshow of her work, speaking on her experiences as a photographer for German magazines, as well as photographic storytelling. Participants ask questions throughout. Koelbl's presentation continues during the fourth segment, followed by Shames, who presents projects from his career, discussing the experience of taking photographs while also participating in demonstrations. He laments the lack of photo essays about American topics and describes his process of engaging with his subjects on long-term projects. The recording ends in the middle of Shames's presentation.
