New School for Social Research (New York, N.Y. : 1919-1997)
(speaker)Benedict J. Fernandez
June 3 – 7 1985
In the first of two segments, an unidentified man introduces Abigail Heyman and mentions her book of documentary photography, Growing Up Female
. Heyman begins by asking about the course and the host of the event provides a brief description. Heyman then presents a slideshow of work from the last ten years, with photographs from Growing Up Female
, as well as work from a grant project completed on the United States-Mexico border. She shows color photographs from the period when she started to photograph "parties" such as Mardi Gras and the presidential inauguration. In the second segment, Heyman raises the ethical dilemma of whether photographers should prioritize taking photographs or ensuring their subjects are not misrepresented. When the second recording begins, Heyman and students seem to be looking through and discussing her books and photographs. The recording ends before the end of the event.
