For my project, I am looking at Syrians as the new wave of immigrants in New York. By extracting the properties that define Syria’s urban population as a collectivist society with a people focused lifestyle and a value for commerce and exchange, it became clear that the lighting design should promote these activities for a better sense of community and identity. Lighting in Syria is presented through decorative ornamental luminaires, but is also used to express religious and traditional values. Breaking down the lighting qualities to what best reflects Syria’s culture would be adapting a high contrast, controlled distribution, warm color temperatures and instances of use of colored lighting.
