This thesis investigates the exterior courtyards created by New York City’s densely-packed residential buildings constructed between 1900 and 1930, and the potential in using the electric light that emanates from within the private interiors to explore the use and/or manipulation of view, proximity, privacy, and interactivity for the purposes of germinating environmental awareness and neighborly interest to ultimately forge, strengthen, and sustain communal bonds.
