The potentials of light in design applications can be envisioned by studying artistic light installations and current technology. By analyzing current uses of light, predictions can be made how light will evolve to become more than a device to illuminate a surface; light can become a non‐physical building material and define space. Light can be volumetric, allowing spaces to transform themselves seamlessly through light, enriching their functional capabilities and providing flexible varieties in visual appearance. This will also give individuals an unprecedented amount of control over their personal environment within the public built environment.
