A memorial is a creation of human cultural life: it attempts to communicate the spirit of collective memory. In this thesis, I argue for the use of light as a primary material in the construction of memorials in order to evoke a deeper emotive experience. ‘Light Memorials’ prompt unique psychological and physical qualities through their ephemeral and inviting nature. Moreover, they will inscribe their momentary presence in our heart and fundamentally recall the memories of vanished ones. Light has the capacity to evoke stronger and deeper emotions and ultimately expand the presence of the memorial to the commemoration of everyday loss and change.
