(sponsoring body)Jeremy Dyer
My current body of photographic work began as an exploration of youth music-based subculture and the way in which personal and (sub)cultural expression manifests itself as ritualized violence and articulates a longing for an essential mythology and cultural identity by way of a sense of dislocation from earth, culture, and identity. This longing and the cultural production that is born from it is expressed as epigonic yearning, a nostalgia for an imagined past. It is these relationships between culture and history, false nostalgia and the authentic gesture as they are reflected within the framework of subculture that I am examining with this work.
