During the summer of 2004, following my surgery, I returned to the hospital to photograph the floral vending machine. A doctor approached me as I was photographing the structure and asked me what was it that I saw. This read-made sculpture embodied several themes I would come to discover and examine during my MFA career. I regarded the vending machine as a body and its empty compartments as missing pieces of that body. Even the fluorescent lights seemed to interact and perform with the subjects present in the environment and the spaces within the piece. My profound reaction to the vending machine and the themes that have evolved from this experience remain present throughout my work. These ideas often overlap–blurring where one theme begins and another ends.
