Description
zine net.work is a radical visualization of the holdings of the Barnard Zine Library, a collection of 5,300 zines with an emphasis on queer authors, women and nonbinary authors, and authors of color. The large-scale visualization offers a maplike interface as an alternative to traditional library catalog interfaces. By rendering this collection (literally) visible, the project seeks to expose the invisible structures of organization within library collections. The project is supplemented by code and documentation that allows other archivists, librarians, scholars, and developers to apply the visualization techniques to their own collections. A rigorous academic exploration of normativity and bias in library information systems accompanies the project.
