Photo Poet is a project that explores using computational technology to expand photography from an artistic perspective. Instead of improving camera performance or enhancing the photo, Photo Poet focuses on affecting the photographer’s artistic performance. Photo Poet features a poetry generation program that can write poems based on a digital photograph. Also, Photo Poet invites photographers to present their photo pieces to the program and to make another piece as a response to the generated poem. The process of computer using poem to respond to photo and human using photo respond to poem can be repeated endlessly. In the process, it communicates the comparison between human perception and computer perception. With computer vision and generative technology, Photo Poet takes part in the creation of the artwork. It represents the information of the photos in the form of poetry, which becomes an extension of the photo piece. The generated poem and the photographs become a collaboration and an artistic conversation between human and computer.
