After All Voices is a mixed media installation that reflects on the situation of China’s Rustbelt, subtly interwoven with the artist’s own nostalgia of this place as “hometown”. It consists of three vital components: animated machines, which are continually shaping and forging materials into the shape of a gauge block; gauge blocks as the core symbolic objects, signifying the place’s history of regulation; and a film I shot while wandering around this depleted Rustbelt, serving as the contextualization and the direct exposure of that area. This piece references the aftermath of the demise of China’s planned economy and the disappearance of the socialist industry it entailed, highlighting the metaphorical representation of the long-lasting impacts. I aim to engage the viewer in an intense cinematic and experiential atmosphere of loss, useless and the indifference of time, providing an unsentimental yet melancholy glimpse of something absorbed in the flow of fast-paced modernization.
