4th Wall is a project that seeks to explore the expanding boundaries of interactive narrative in the digital age. The current, pervasive nature of technology in peoples’ lives provides an opportunity to expand the way that they view narrative and how to interact with it. The project lives within the context of a game that plays out within an alternate reality that exists solely in virtual space.
Players interact with the world of the story through a variety of technologies including the web and email interactions with characters. This invites the players to become characters within the story in order to foster a higher level of engagement.
The project also functions as critical design by examining tactics utilized by real-life organizations such as the pharmaceutical industry as well as self-help groups and cults as well as conspiracy theorists. Players will have to examine these tactics in order to explore the play-space and reveal the narrative of the game.
