1.5: Yell-Oh girls is a cultural awareness animation based on the anthology “YELL-Oh Girls!” The book is a collection of teenage girls’ writings about growing up as Asian Americans and addresses complex issues including dual identities, identity crises, cultural differences, cultural awareness, culture clashes, assimilation, stereotypes, family matters, body image and diversity. The writings in the book have inspired girls to speak out and to embrace their unique Asian American identity. Hopefully this project can reach a wider audience and continue to inspire and empower Asian American girls everywhere. My project is also an effort to make Asian Americans more visible in American society, in an attempt to give and strengthen the collective voice of all Asian American girls. The target audience is foreign-born or native-born Asian American teenage and young adult girls (ages from 13-21). The final animation is approximately five minutes long and has been created with motion graphics (2d animation, still images, live action footage), compositing, and sound design.
