The twenty-fifth anniversary of the establishment of the University in Exile is marked by a dinner at The Waldorf-Astoria, with a thousand invited academics and public life figures. This recording includes speeches by honored guests Detlev W. Bronk, president of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research (now known as Rockefeller University), and poet and author Carl Sandburg. Chairman of the New School Board of Trustees Joseph Halle Schaffner presided over the event. The first part of the recording includes the speech by Bronk and the first half of Sandburg's speech. The second recording has the remainder of Sandburg's address as well as remarks by New School President Hans Simons, who conferred honorary degrees on Bronk, Sandburg, and Henri Bonnet, former French ambassador to the United States. The recording concludes with remarks by the chair of the Graduate Faculty, Hans Staudinger. Staudinger's speech is cut off by the end of the recording.
