The photograph depicts folk dancers probably from Central Europe, performing in the Dance Studio of the 66 West 12th Street building. The dance studio and this first building of The New School were designed by Joseph Urban. It was open to the public on January 1, 1931. Throughout the 1930s, The New School hosted a series of performances by the Folk Festival Council.
