 The New School Archives staff believes this recording was made in a lecture associated with the seminar, Philosophical Anthropology: An Introduction, taught in the Spring 1989 semester at the New School for Social Research. The course catalog describes the class as, "an exposition and a discussion of three chief issues in the contemporary philosophical study of man: transcendence, mind-body, and historicality. In each of these problem areas, the contemporary debates will be traced back to their historical origins and solutions. Contemporary readings from Max Scheler, Helmut Plessner, Rudolf Carnap, Gilbert Ryle, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, and Jean-Paul Sartre; background references: Aristotle, On the Soul; Descartes, The Passions of the Soul; and Immanuel Kant, On History.
