About

Julius Rudel (1921-2014) was a renowned opera and orchestra conductor who graduated from the Mannes School of Music in 1943. He served at various times as music director of the Kennedy Center, Wolf Trap Opera, the Caramoor Festival and the Buffalo Philharmonic. Most notably, Rudel was director and principal conductor for New York City Opera for 22 years (1957-1979), a period many consider to be that company's golden age. The Julius Rudel Papers include annotated conducting scores and notes, news clippings and articles documenting Rudel's career, programs and playbills, correspondence with colleagues, biographical material, and photographs.
